Kimberly-Clark is focusing on the potential of Hesperaloe, a native, low-water-use plant that thrives in the arid climate of the Southwest U.S., as an alternative fiber to be integrated across its hygiene products portfolio. As part of its commitment to Better Care for a Better World, K-C researchers have developed a patented technology platform by transforming fibers from the succulent plant into a sustainable material and are establishing a pilot facility in Yuma, AZ dedicated to advancing Hesperaloe-related research efforts. The company expects these efforts to strengthen its long-term fiber supply resilience and advance its responsible stewardship of natural resources.

Meanwhile, in its second quarter earnings call, Kimberly-Clark noted that Chinese sales were negatively impacted by false claims that its diapers tested positive for formamide. In June, Chinese state media reported that popular infant diaper brands—including Huggies, Babycare, and Bibabebe—tested positive the chemical, an industrial solvent and reproductive toxicant. While these claims were refuted through a multi-government agency investigation, the report was widely circulated via social media and negatively impacted second quarter sales.

“There really is no scientific evidence backing the claims,” says COO Russ Torres. “We did make multiple independent tests conducted by certified third-party labs that confirmed that our products are safe and they were non-detect tests.”
